Sebastian Ottinger Wins Jan Švejnar and Katherine Terrell Teaching Prize for 2025/2026

Sebastian Ottinger has been awarded the Jan Švejnar and Katherine Terrell Teaching Prize for the 2025/2026 academic year. The prize recognizes outstanding teaching quality in CERGE-EI’s graduate economics program and is awarded on the basis of student evaluations.

This year, Sebastian received the award for his course Economic History of the United States. The course introduces students to selected topics and recent research in U.S. economic history, with particular attention to the topics of internal and international migration, cities, innovation, and culture.

Beyond providing students with an in-depth understanding of the research frontier in US economic history, the course develops students’ ability to formulate, communicate, present, and critically evaluate research ideas and causal research designs in applied economics.

Sebastian has been an Assistant Professor at CERGE-EI since 2022. His research focuses on political economy, economic history, and urban economics.

The Jan Švejnar and Katherine Terrell Teaching Prize is awarded annually based on student evaluations of first- and second-year graduate courses with sufficient enrollment and response rates. The award highlights the importance of excellent teaching and of student feedback in maintaining and developing the quality of graduate education at CERGE-EI.
