Admissions
Admission Process – PhD in Economics
The Admissions Committee evaluates all materials received by the application deadline (March 31). Applicants are notified when their application is complete and has been forwarded to the Committee.
The Admission Committee evaluates whether the applicants' background, qualification and professional interests sufficiently meet the requirements of the program and are in accordance with the research focus of the CERGE-EI. Applicants are notified of the admission decision (direct admission, an invitation to Preparatory semester, or rejection) within 2 weeks after the deadline.
Direct Admission
Based on applicants' background, qualifications, and motivation applicants will be invited for an interview before a committee. The interview will focuse on research abilities and potential examples from previous research (academic studies, articles, thesis, other activities). Motivation and overall maturity of the candidate are also assessed. The interview is conducted in English, testing the applicant's ability to use professional economic English.
The admissions committee evaluates the following: motivation for study, overall professional profile and any previous teaching and publication activities, ability to formulate research questions, familiarity with current economic research, and potential for involvement in the institute's research and teaching activities.
Preparatory Semester
Each year, about 40 PhD applicants are invited to attend online preparatory course (in May), which is designed to support applicants with varying levels of knowledge of Mathematics. It provides potential students with a knowledge base to build during their PhD study at CERGE-EI.
The overall performance in Mathematics (assignments and final exam) determines which Preparatory semester participants are admitted into the PhD Program, usually about 20 applicants each year. All participants are notified of their admission to the PhD program in the first half of June. The academic year starts in October.
