Introduction to R Programming

Time: 18:00-20:00
Date: Monday, 6 March and Tuesday, 7 March 2017

Course information:

The course will start from the basic concepts in R programming, such as setting up working directory and loading files. The main focus will be data analysis by using up-to-date packages called dplyr and magrittr.

Goal of the course:

After this course, students will be able to conduct basic empirical analysis and to understand other advanced materials more easily. The knowledge acquired from this course will be useful for conducting analysis in various projects, term papers and bachelor/master thesis in the future.

Prerequisites:

1. No requirement on prior knowledge of programming.
2. It is necessary to install RStudio into your laptop before you come to the class. RStudio can be downloaded with no cost from the Internet.

Course outline:

  • Load files.
  • Introduce "pipe" (dplyr and magrittr packages).
  • Analyze data.
  • Introduce some techniques used in tidying up data. (We will cover this if time allows).

About the facilitator:

Ivan Sutoris is a PhD student at CERGE-EI.

Registration for this course is closed.

Course information:

This course will provide an introduction to working with R, a powerful free statistical software and programming language. After discussing basics of R programming, we will cover modern R tools for manipulating and visualizing data from the "tidyverse" collection of packages.

Prerequisites:

1. Prior knowledge of programming (in any language) is useful, but not necessary.

2. To follow along it is necessary to install RStudio into your laptop before you come to the class. RStudio can be downloaded with no cost from the Internet.

Course outline:

  • R essentials, basic programming, importing data
  • reshaping, transforming and summarizing data
  • working with different types of variables (strings, dates, factors)
  • visualizing data with ggplot2

Participants who attend at least 75% of the sessions will obtain a Certificate of Attendance issued by CERGE-EI.

About the facilitator:

Ivan Sutoris has been a long-time user of R. He has earned master's degree in applied mathematics from Comenius University and in economics from CERGE-EI. Currently he is a PhD student at CERGE-EI and works part-time at Czech National Bank.
